How long did it take to make the original Super Mario Brothers?

Back in the NES days, no game was a better introduction to the world of Nintendo than the original Super Mario Brothers. However, I can find very little information about the length of time it took to develop. This is probably due to Nintendo’s secretive nature, a trend they carry forward to this day, but I’d still be fascinated to know. Just curious if anyone has any details.

It was probably made by Shiggy in his bedroom in a month :P
