How do I connect another wii controller if i wanna play 2 player on mario party 8?

Me and my brother just got mario party 8 and when we pick multiplayer with 2 people it says please connect another wii controller, so on the 2nd controller we press 1 and 2 and the 4 lights keep blinking, but then they turn off after a little while and it still says please connect the 2nd wii controller. anyone know what im doing wrong?

If you want to make the controller link permanent, take off the battery cover on the Wii remote. Then open the SD cover on the Wii. In both of these locations, you will see a red button labeled ‘SYNC’. Hold down both of these buttons until the lights on the controller blink and then release them. Now it should work. Maybe you could check the batteries too…..
